After photographing numerous babies, I’ve learned exactly what is required to accomplish these poses- and trust me, they are all dependent on the baby! For example, some babies are very sensitive to, while others can snooze through a two-hour session like a gem – but you don’t really discover their sensitivities until you are already in the midst of photographing them.
An experienced photographer will start with a plan, but will tweak the plan and use their own tricks and strategies if the baby is uncomfortable in any way. I am sharing three of my must-haves here that you will see in any of my newborn sessions: Baby shusher, Lulla-vibe, and white noise machine!

Certain poses require specific safety factors that ensure the baby doesn’t topple over. Just because a baby looks asleep, doesn’t mean they won’t move! The startle reflex is real. Even simple things like making sure the camera strap is securely around my neck when photographing directly above a newborn or putting the camera down when posing the baby are things an inexperienced photographer or a friend who has a nice camera may not even think of.
